THE Katie Trust has enjoyed another hugely successful year in
terms of revenue generated through fund-raising and money spent furthering
our charitable aims which, now that a strong financial base has permitted,
have begun to broaden.
The aims of the charity are to brighten the lives of young
cancer patients and their families and to advance research into childhood
cancers. The charity is staffed entirely by volunteers who take neither
a salary nor expenses of any nature.
The Katie Trust is registered as a local charity to carry
out its work in the counties of Durham, Tyne and Wear, Cumbria, Northumberland
and the area covered by the former county of Cleveland.
The Katie Trust banks with the National Westminster Bank,
High Street, Redcar. In addition to its current account, the charity has
an interest-earning reserve account, into which funds have been transferred
at the treasurer's discretion.
A total of £511.13 in interest was earned
up to March 31st 2004.
This was the largest amount of annual interest ever recorded
by The Katie Trust and was the result of successful fund-raising campaigns.
Having such a large sum in our bank account created the platform to commit
ourselves to specific projects and the interest generated adequately
covered overheads not paid for by grants or sponsorship deals, ensuring we
could continue our proud boast that every penny donated to The Katie Trust
would be used to further our charitable aims.
At March 31st 2003, a Katie Trust cash fund of £65,900.
25 was in place - once again higher that the previous year’s figure (£54,266.06).
Once again, all fund-raising activities have been well-organised and
cost effective.
Our continued policy of attracting sponsorship to cover
potential overheads again increased the resources available for charitable
purposes. In the past financial year we attracted a further grant of £180
to cover our postage costs and consumables, while our Christmas card collection
sales were boosted enormously by Vision Press of Middlesbrough producing
them free of charge and PTP Consultants Ltd donating envelopes.
A large consignment of stationery (envelopes, paper, correction
fluid, pens, Post-its) were donated by Marton Hotel towards the end of the
financial year while PTP Consultants have continued to meet costs of other
overheads including transport and food costs for our BUPA Great North Run
team plus the purchase of a new phone/fax machine (£199.99).
Grants of £50 from the Weinstein Foundation and
£200 from the Woolf Charitable Trust were made to help with running
costs.
Charles McManamy, holder of the first Katie Trust PhD
Studentship in Medulloblastoma, completed his three-year term at the Northern
Institute for Cancer Research in Newcastle upon Tyne in December 2003 so
no payment towards that post was made during the past financial year.
However a payment of £23,956.00 was made to the
University of Newcastle upon Tyne. This was the second of three annual instalments
to fund our second Trust PhD Studentship in Medulloblastoma, held by
Jennifer Anderton.
Among The Katie Trust’s aims is to help prevent the relief
of financial hardship. In the past financial year we helped two families
in this way - one with the provision of £260 to help with travel costs
from Middlesbrough to Newcastle General Hospital while their young son received
treatment for a brain tumour; and a grant of £800 to the parents of
another young brain tumour patient who sadly died. Both parents had given
up work to care for their daughter and requested help to meet funeral costs.
The Katie Trust agreed to a request from Sargent Cancer
Care for Children to contribute £6,000 towards the maintenance of a
care worker’s post, based in Newcastle upon Tyne and covering the North-East
of England and Cumbria. PTP Consultants Ltd donated half of this amount
The Katie Trust’s third annual Summer Party took
place at the Hollywood Bowl in Teesside Park, Stockton, and a specific grant
of £1,000 from the Rotary Club of Redcar covered the cost.
The total amount raised during the financial year ending
March 31, 2003 was £45,203.41 - bringing the total raised since The
Katie Trust’s inception in May 1999 to £191,621.27.
Unsolicited donations totalled £6,030.34 while fund-raising
by the Niall Howard Fund resulted in an additional £5,000 being presented
to us.
The most profitable day of the year was BUPA Great North
Run Day. Money raised from runners attracting sponsorship was
£8,355.76, while the Richard Dytham Memorial Fund continued their sterling
fund-raising efforts, resulting in £4,045.00 coming to The Katie Trust
and Cap Gemini Ernst and Young raised £3,248.38 from a series events
after choosing us as their nominated charity for the year.
A pre-Christmas Body Shop party raised £884.00 and
Darlington and District Motor Club’s efforts - including the staging of a
Katie Trust Challenge saloon car race at Croft Circuit - raised £1,000.
Christmas card sales were disappointing compared to previous years but nevertheless
realised £1,189.15 and required no outlay.
Revenue generated from The Katie Trust’s collecting boxes
totalled £456.27 while our Inland Revenue claim brought in £1,011.29,
once again an increase from the previous year.
The Katie Trust accounts feature a PhD Student
Fund and a General Fund. The former features funds which have been raised
specifically for the Cancer Research Unit Project while the latter features
funds which may be used at the trustees’ discretion.
